The architectural design of De Markthal was entrusted to the renowned architectural firm MVRDV, led by architects Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs, and Nathalie de Vries. Their vision for the market was nothing short of groundbreaking – a vibrant, horseshoe-shaped building with apartments and commercial spaces wrapped around an enormous, open-air food market. The most striking feature of De Markthal is its horseshoe-shaped arch, which spans 40 meters in height, 70 meters in width, and 120 meters in length. The glass facade is composed of 4,000 individual glass panels, each unique in size and shape, giving the structure a pixelated appearance.

This 11,000-square-meter mural showcases a vibrant array of fruits, vegetables, and other food items, paying homage to the market’s purpose. The mural, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam,” was created using state-of-the-art digital printing technology.
